WWJD? What would Jesus do? WWJD, was a clever campaign that started a while back where many Christians wore the plastic wrist-bands with the initials inscribed to remind them to think about what Jesus would do in any given situation. Not a bad idea when you think about it. But we know what he would do because we know what he did back then. A recent question was asked of a prominent televangelist. He was asked by the media, why do you drive around in a Rolls Royce? Do you think this is what Jesus would have done? His answer: Yes I think he would have driven around in a Rolls Royce said he, if he were walking the streets of America today. But lets look at the facts. What did Jesus ride around in if anything at all in his day. The Rolls Royce if you will, of his day was a horse and or a horse and chariot. Guess what he never rode one! Matthew 21:5 reads "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass" A foal is a baby donkey and an ass is another word for a donkey. So the one time he 'rode' anything at all was on a donkey and it was very short lived, perhaps a five minute ride then it was returned to it's owner, it wasn't even his! So why did Jesus ride a donkey and not a horse? Because he was and is the prince of peace and not of war. He came in lowliness and meekness as symbolized by the animal he chose to ride. Could he have ridden on a horse or a chariot if he wanted to? Of course he could have because he owns it all anyway but the point being he came as a humble servant to serve us to show us how we are to live and treat others. He never came so we could have 'our best life now' as many other charlatan televangelist are preaching. for the real Christian our best life is yet to come in heaven not here on earth. We need to store up our treasure in heaven where it can't be stolen, not here where it can. We also love the bumper sticker which reads: Who would Jesus bomb? Answer no one, he came to love, but soon and very soon it will be to make things right here on earth and to set up his kingdom. Next time he is coming as the victorious lion of Judah on a white horse, not the meek lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world and came to die the first time. |
